Trend Report: Velvet
Historically, velvet fabric has been considered a true luxury. Back in medieval times the colors you wore represented your social status. Hues such as rich purples and blues represented the royal family. The homes of the wealthy, curtains and clothes were covered in this rich fabric. Recently velvet has had a comeback and is having a huge moment for Fall/Winter. I embrace velvet for its ability to add depth and texture to a look.
Dries Van Noten adopted velvet in all of the looks that came down the runway. From crushed velvet booties, clutches, longs skirts and bomber jacket's, no look was missing a hint of velvet. Alberta Ferretti sent down a soft pink slouchy smoking suit. The gold trim piping made it the perfect mix of luxe and casual. Lanvin added layers on the luxe fabric with heavy high waisted pants and rich patterned blazers. Valentino sent down a style we have already become accustomed too this summer, layering sweet dresses over turtlenecks. Brock Collection—recent winners of the CFDA fashion fund award—included a simple black dress with a deep neckline in their Fall 2016 collection.
